Belief ascription in mixed initiative dialogue
Real dialogues often feature conflicting beliefs and goals between the participants. In such cases, it is often necessary for one participant to reason about the nature of the conflict and respond appropriately. This paper presents a brief outline of a computational theory of dialogue understanding which can deal with such conflicts. Our theory is capable of distinguishing between cases of prag...
متن کاملEffort denial in self-deception
We propose a mixed belief model of self-deception. According to the theory, people distribute belief over two possible causal paths to an action, one where the action is freely chosen and one where it is due to factors outside of conscious control. Self-deceivers take advantage of uncertainty about the influence of each path on their behavior, and shift weight between them in a self-serving way...
متن کاملOn the “Tension” Inherent in Self-Deception
Alfred Mele’s deflationary account of self-deception has frequently been criticised for being unable to explain the ‘‘tension’’ inherent in self-deception. These critics maintain that rival theories can better account for this tension, such as theories which suppose self-deceivers to have contradictory beliefs. However, there are two ways in which the tension idea has been understood. In this a...

Self-deception is a special kind of motivational dominance in belief-formation. We develop criteria which set paradigmatic self-deception apart from related phenomena of auto-manipulation such as pretense and motivational bias. In self-deception rational subjects defend or develop beliefs of high subjective importance in response to strong counter-evidence. Self-deceivers make or keep these bel...

متن کاملToward a Formal Analysis of Deceptive Signaling
Deception has long been an important topic in philosophy (see Augustine 1952; Kant 1996; Chisholm & Feehan 1977; Mahon 2007; Carson 2010). However, the traditional analysis of the concept, which requires that a deceiver intentionally cause her victim to have a false belief, rules out the possibility of much deception in the animal kingdom. Cognitively unsophisticated species, such as fireflies ...
